The Outsiders

Author: S. E. Hinton

Genre: Young adult fiction

Publication Date: 1967

Overview

The Outsiders was written by S.E. Hinton as a junior in high school. It details the rivalry between the two gangs, “Greasers” and “Socs,” who belong to different social classes. Inspired by an actual fight that Hinton witnessed between her friends, this novel was published by Viking Press in 1967 when she was 18. Hinton has expressed that her intention behind writing this book was to highlight the real-life experiences of an adolescent living through the 1960s. This was the time when movements for liberation were taking place, an idea that is central to the novel.

Although popular, the book was criticized for its portrayal of drinking, underage smoking, and gang violence. However, generations of young adults continue to resonate with the book and contribute to its popularity. Many readers identified with the struggles of the Greasers, who belonged to the working class. By portraying reality and not assuming a moralistic tone, Hinton is a pioneer in the sphere of young adult literature. S.E. Hinton, like many literary foremothers before her, chose to keep her feminine first name a secret such that the book is known for its content and not judged by the author’s gender. The book has been adapted into series, a film, and several theatrical productions.
